Non-Traditional Text Presentation

I did my non-traditional text presentation on the Las Vegas shooting because it occurred a day before I presented. I felt connected to this tragedy because my parents were in the exact spot that this happened a week earlier, when they attended the annual iHeartRadio Music Festival. The link to the article I used to analyze the event, the video, and the tweet was: http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/crime-law-justice/crime/shootings/las-vegas-strip-shooting-EVCAL00098-topic.html

  • The text: A video of people running from the scene of the shooting in Las Vegas at a country music concert (included in an article by the Chicago Tribune)

  • How the text is typical and atypical: This text is typical during the 21st century because it is a form of news that is able to circulate quickly and effectively through social media and news articles. It is atypical because it is from a spectator that attended the concert, not a journalist or news anchor that is capturing the moment. Also, it is shaking and filled with emotion.

  • Rhetorical situation the text/genre arose from/addresses: The rhetorical situation of gun violence, terrorism, and violent acts at events with large crowds and capacities is shown in the video. The article also addresses the rhetorical situation within text.

  • How the content is typical and atypical of the genre: The content is typical of the video genre because it captures an event during real and current time, and is circulated around social media. It is atypical because it is captured by someone attending the concert.

  • The tone or style and the purpose(s) of the text/genre: The tone is emotional and raw because it is right when the shooting began. You can hear the gunshots during the video, reoccurring over and over again. The purpose of the text is allowing people to understand the circumstances and what actually was happening during the shooting.

  • The intended or consequential audience of the text/genre: The intended audience is to allow people to understand what is going on during the events and how scary it was to attend/be at. Also, the consequential audience is everyone reading the article.

  • A brief description of the evolution of the genre: The genre of videos included in articles changed when social media evolved.

  • Potential complication, implications, problems, and pitfalls of the text/genre: A video can be taken in any circumstance and could be taken at a time where the scene/event shouldn’t be documented. It is very easy to circulate these videos with the evolution of social media and can destroy somebody’s reputation or career because of what shown to the public.

  • A list of sources used and/or potentially useful: The Chicago Tribune and Twitter.
