“Don’t worry”.
“This doesn’t need to be perfect”.
“It’s called ‘Rough Draft’ for a reasons”.
“RAW material”.
“Quantity not Quality”.
The five phrases mentioned above are the key components that writers need to take into consideration when composing a rough draft. The process of ‘rough drafting’ can be seen as difficult, confusing, and time consuming, but it is vital to remember that this is individualistic, messy, and used for “creativity and experimentation”. The professor or administrator that assigns the rough draft should not be reading this content because it is the first time thoughts are being put into words and translated on paper, and are used for the future construction of an overall essay. “Grammar, punctuation, spelling, transitions, topic sentences, organization, titles”, etc. should not be the emphasis; rather, taking time to write, create, explore topics, free write, and so on should be the primary intention of a rough draft. In addition, it can also be difficult to get started on a rough draft. The writer might not know how to begin, start the first sentence, begin the introduction, or compose as a document of the topic; therefore, there are many tips that are mentioned in The Bedford Book of Genres that can be used as suggestions to create a rough draft: First, the chapter mentions writing for 30+ minutes. This will allow for many words to be put on paper where some ideas are able to form and examples can be used for the actual essay.Second, the chapter advises the writer to not stop for the entire designated writing time. Third and lastly, writing until a certain word limit is reached or until the time runs out is important so all thoughts the writer has can be put on paper and referred to later.
